The Fallout of Operation CASTLE Bravo

This project uses poetry and primary source documents to tell the story of the Castle Bravo Nuclear Test in the Marshall Islands. Structured around excerpts from oral interviews, newspaper articles, press conferences, and congressional logs, I have created loose poems that weave together conflicting historical narratives. My goal is to put the sources in conversation with each other in order to surface moments of contradiction and complexity. However, like all historical accounts, my work is not comprehensive; my writing cannot fill the holes of incomplete historical documentation, especially considering the limitations of 10-weeks worth of research and my identity as a non-Marshallese author. However, I encourage readers to continue learning more about the legacy of nuclear testing through my classmates’ projects.
